Developed specifically for juvenile probation, detention, and corrections professionals, the MHTC-JJ provides critical information and practical strategies for interacting with youth who are experiencing mental, substance use, and traumatic stress conditions.

The MHTC-JJ provides research-based instruction that increases juvenile justice practitioner knowledge and develops and enhances skills to support effective and safe interactions with youth. It covers the following topics

  • Adolescent development
  • Mental and substance use conditions
  • Childhood trauma
  • Evidence-based treatment and supports
  • Family engagement
  • Effective skills for working with youth – “What you can do”
  • Self-care

Target Audience (Train-the-Trainer): Training Teams of juvenile probation, detention and corrections staff, along with local mental health professionals.

Who is considered a certified MHTC-JJ Trainer?

To be certified, an individual must…

  • Participate in an NCMHJJ sponsored Train-the-Trainer event
  • Deliver at least two (2) MHTC-JJ trainings each year
  • Maintain current membership in the MHTC-JJ Trainer Network

What are the benefits of becoming a certified trainer or receiving training from an NCMHJJ certified trainer?

Certified trainers…

  • Have access to the most current training curricula, which is updated annually.
  • Participate in continuing learning activities to support in-depth understanding of best practice for educating adult learners and emerging research on topics covered by the curriculum.
  • Collect and report evaluation data to the NCMHJJ which is used to inform updates to the training curricula, and highlight practice improvements nationally.
