Article Addresses Issue of Systematic Bias in Court-Ordered Mental Health Services for Juvenile Offenders
The authors, Anne Dannerbeck Janku and Jiahui Yan, studied data obtained from a statewide assessment system on African American and Caucasian status offenders and delinquents formally processed in a Missouri circuit over a one-year period. They found that relative to the population distribution, African American youth were overrepresented in the juvenile justice system, yet underrepresented in orders for mental health services. Their findings can be found in their article entitled “Exploring Patterns of Court-Ordered Mental Health Services for Juvenile Offenders,” in the April 2009 issue of Criminal Justice and Behavior, Vol. 36, No. 4.
