Summary

Module 2: Screening and Assessment

7. Special Issues

Youth with co-occurring disorders present challenges during the screening and assessment process. Information that is self-reported may be misleading because adolescents often underreport or overreport their mental health symptoms and substance use. Also, psychological symptoms may be attributed to intoxication, drug use, or withdrawal, thus making clarification of the diagnosis a difficult or lengthy process.
