5G. Important Questions When Choosing Assessment Tools for Co-occurring Disorders

When choosing screening and assessment strategies for youth involved with juvenile justice who have co-occurring disorders, it is important to keep the following in mind:

  • Is the instrument or the questions on it culturally appropriate?
  • If reading is required, is the reading level appropriate for the population of youth being assessed?
  • What background or training is required to administer the instrument?
  • Who will administer the instrument?
  • Does the length of time required to administer the instrument fit the planned assessment point?
