Module 2: Screening and Assessment

5B. Substance Abuse Assessment

When conducting a more comprehensive substance abuse assessment, an evaluator follows up on the information gathered from the substance abuse screening. The goal is to better understand the nature of the youth’s substance abuse, the severity of that abuse, and what intervention strategies are likely to be successful with a particular youth. Collateral sources and standardized assessment instruments provide details surrounding the youth’s pattern of substance abuse they are unwilling to report themselves. For more information on substance abuse assessment tools see Standardized Screening and Assessment Instruments.
