Summary

Module 2: Screening and Assessment

3D. Reassessment

It is recommended that youth in juvenile justice, particularly those with co-occurring disorders, receive periodic and routine reassessment of risk and needs (e.g., every 90 days) for the following reasons:

  • Youth circumstances change frequently, and cognitive and emotional development affects risk and needs
  • Youth may need higher or lower level of supervision
  • Youth’s treatment plan may need to be modified

Predicting whether a youth will engage in future criminal behavior is difficult. The intent of risk assessment instruments is to classify offenders into groups based on estimated combined outcomes. Because of this, risk assessment scores should not be the sole criteria when making placement decisions for youth with co-occurring disorders.
