Module 2: Screening and Assessment

Stage 4: Dependency or Addiction to Drugs or Alcohol
The following are characteristics of Stage 4:

Behavioral

  • Use drugs or alcohol daily or on a continuous basis
  • Take serious risks or engage in criminal behavior to obtain drugs
  • Have quit school or were expelled from school
  • Have run away from home
  • Have had possible overdoses

Emotional or Mental

  • Take drugs to avoid depression or pain; many want to escape realities of daily living
  • Are out of control with their drug use
  • Have suicidal thoughts or attempts
  • Experience guilt, shame, remorse
  • Exhibit changing emotions (depression, irritability, aggression, irritation, apathy)
  • Have changes in personality
  • Experience memory loss, flashbacks, paranoia, volatile mood swings, other mental problems
  • Take drugs to feel normal; they are unlikely to experience euphoria
  • Do not care about getting caught; they are focused on getting and using drugs at any cost
  • Focus all interest on getting and using drugs

Physical

  • Have blackouts
  • Show signs of physical deterioration (health problems, weight loss)
  • Have poor physical appearance
