Module 2: Screening and Assessment

Stage 3: Habitual Use or Daily Preoccupation with Drugs or Alcohol
The following are characteristics of Stage 3:

Behavioral

  • Engage in almost daily use and may use drugs/alcohol alone
  • May sell drugs to keep personal supply/may steal for money for drugs
  • Have made unsuccessful efforts to control use
  • Have poor school performance/attendance, no straight friends, drug culture appearance, poor family relationships, personality changes
  • Steal, lie, or con others to cover use; are completely focused on obtaining and using drugs/alcohol

Emotional or Mental

  • Experience depression or uncomfortable feelings when not using drugs; use drugs/alcohol to stay high; or use drugs/alcohol to maintain normal feelings
  • May have suicidal thoughts/attempts
  • Experience shame and guilt
  • After euphoria, experience pain, depression, discomfort

Physical

  • Need more substance to produce same effect
