Module 2: Screening and AssessmentThe types of mental health disorders commonly seen in the juvenile justice system may be categorized as mood disorders, such as major depression, dysthymic disorder, and bipolar disorder, and other disorders, such as attention-deficit/hyperactivity, conduct, learning, posttraumatic stress, borderline personality, and psychotic disorders. Comorbidity, also discussed in this section, refers to having more than one mental health disorder at the same time. Youth who meet diagnostic criteria for a mental health disorder have typically displayed an impairment in their ability to function or are experiencing significant distress. Diagnostic criteria for each of the following are described in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV). Summaries of the diagnostic criteria and additional resources may be found at MentalHelp.net. The entire DSM-IV may be ordered from the American Psychiatric Association by calling 800-368-5777. |
