Module 1: Overview of the Juvenile Justice, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse Treatment Systems7E. Sexual IdentityGay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered youth are at great risk for developing significant mood-related disorders and engaging in self-mutilation and suicidal behavior. The loneliness, vulnerability, and sense of isolation that these youth experience when placed in juvenile justice facilities require the development of services that are sensitive to their specific needs. Treatment interventions need to be designed so these youth are helped to be confident about their sexual identity. ![]()
