Module 1: Overview of the Juvenile Justice, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse Treatment Systems

6. Related Systems

It is often necessary to work with the schools and special education and the child welfare system in addition to providing mental health and substance abuse treatment services to youth with co-occurring disorders. An individualized curriculum and an out-of-home placement may be necessary to address the issues that face these youth. It will be helpful for professionals in the juvenile justice, mental health, and substance abuse treatment systems to develop a resource list of education and child welfare personnel with experience in co-occurring disorders.

The exercise related to schools and special education and the exercise related to child welfare are intended to encourage you to start or add to your resource files and extend your collaboration efforts to these systems as well.
